About
Full-bodied anthropology - anthropology is about immersing oneself fully, learning to understand, appreciating and experiencing... and unravelling nuances carefully.
I have been conducting ethnographic work with Jews and Israelis in Germany and the UK since 2003. My PhD, completed in 2009, looks at the creation and maintenance of a liberal Jewish community post-Shoah. Since then, I have held Research Fellowships at the Fritz Bauer Institut (Frankfurt), the University of Wuppertal and University of Basel, where I worked on migration between Germany and Israel, Jewish intermarriage in Switzerland, and the use of ethnographic methods. Besides this work, I have been conducting research with Israeli expatriates in Germany, as well as young Jews in London. My general research interests lie with migration and migrant experiences, mobility and the policing of mobility, concepts of Heimat and Heimatlosigkeit, social networks, friendships and couple relationships, inner-ethnic clustering and ethnically driven action groups, community creation and community decay, narrative and life-story theories and methods, the European Jewish Diaspora, Diasporic Israelis as well as Jewish and non-Jewish immigrants to Israel and returning Israelis.
Since October 2011 I have been researching expatriates and their families in Israel as a member of Area Studies Transregional at University of Erfurt. My focus lies on the dynamic of ethnic boundaries, and inter-ethnic relationships amongst the expatriates, expatriates and Israelis from 1948 to the present. This way, want to tease out how expatriates experience being in Israel.
My other key area of interest lies with thanatology, with a particular focus on suicidal impulse of children and teenagers. I had already done work on suicide for my BA thesis and worked on euthanasia for my MA thesis, the area has never lost its intrigue on me. The study I want to do at one point in the future will l be conducted in a cross cultural fashion in Germany, the UK, Israel, and Australia.
